National Activities Professionals Week is celebrated January 23-27, 2023. The National Association of Activity Professionals has chosen Adventure Awaits as this year’s theme. Adventure is certainly what our life enrichment teams create for our residents!
The association states: “As an activity professional, you are part of a vitally important profession that helps people live a life that is full of fun and meaningful activities.”
In honor of National Activities Professionals Week, we’re highlighting our Life Enrichment Director BreAnna Serrano and the adventure she creates at Avamere at Hillsboro, senior living in Hillsboro, Oregon.
When did you join the company? I started in March 2015. I started as an intern in the memory care, then took over as Arbor life enrichment director (LED) when the LED at the time went on maternity leave. I transferred to Sherwood as their Arbor LED for 18 months, then came back to Hillsboro as the assisted living LED.
What is a highlight of your job? The highlight of my job is getting to know my residents, bringing them joy, and sharing new things with them. What excites me is the people I am around each day, both coworkers and residents.
What advice do you have for fellow life enrichment team members? The advice I would give to fellow life enrichment directors is that you won’t make everyone happy. Do your best to get to know your residents and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
The National Activities Professionals Week theme is “Adventure Awaits.” How do you create adventure for your residents? I create adventure for my residents by trying new things, going to new places, and sharing experiences.
